Here, you are allowed to giggle, jiggle, and altogether sniggle, at others expenses of course. Remember, the first step to mocking isn’t cruelty, it’s hilarity :] please remember that you are not to use profanity, your name, your number, or your dog’s name. Not sure why you can’t use your dog’s name. Please just don’t do it. Rules make no sense, but hey, if you break these you can get a zero! ;)

School Council Movie gains Diana Award for Hawbush Primary School

Are you still looking for ideas to tackle bullying in your school? Charlotte, Nina, Iqbal and Elliot, on the school council at Hawbush Primary, were recently awarded the Princess Diana award “in recognition of students who have made a real difference to tackling bullying in their school and communities”.
This is what they did, with the help of the rest of the school council:
• produced a brilliant film in which they starred, concerning bullying in schools that had a definition of bullying and steps to take if someone was being bullied or if someone knew of bullying taking place
• re-wrote the school policy on bullying to make it easier for the younger pupils to understand.
• put up a post box where people could report bullying without leaving their name.
Because of what they did:
• The bullying policy is sent to all parents each year during anti-bullying week as a reminder of the dangers of bullying and of the actions the school takes to combat it
• The video is also used in assemblies as an aid to teaching other children in the school
Excellent work! You can see the video and policy on our website (via the link from the VoiceBox page)

Sport Relief is just around the corner – What’s your school doing?

HollyoaksOn Friday 14th March, thousands of you across the country will be putting your Sport Relief Socks on at school and getting involved, using everything that’s good about sport to change lives for the better. There are plenty of things your school council can still do, here are some ideas:

1. Order Sport Relief Socks using the Schools Sock Deposit Scheme. Schools can bulk order Socks at a deposit price and pay the remaining money after their event. A pair costs £2 with at least £1 going to Sport Relief. Visit sportrelief.com/schools.
2. Host a mile-long conga during lunchtime – students can pay to take part.
3. Football with a difference – teachers and students dress up as each other! Students can pay to watch.
4. Learn and perform a new sporty trick, perhaps samba or limbo-dancing. Invite and charge friends and family to watch.
5. Tell everyone at school to watch a brilliant weekend of TV on BBC ONE from 7pm on Friday 14th March.

Comic Relief spends the money you raise to help people living incredibly tough lives in the UK and abroad. If you’re still stuck for ideas then there’s a step by step guide with all the advice, ideas and tools you might need at sportrelief.com/school-councils.

If you have any questions, just email schools@sportrelief.com.

Children are Unbeatable campaign

Rachael Harrington (aged 18) writes: In the UK, hitting other people is illegal. It’s called assault. That is unless the person you hit is a child. In that case it is called ‘reasonable chastisement’, and so long as you don’t leave a mark, it is
still legal. To me, this is nonsensical. Surely everyone should have equal protection in the law? If anything, children need extra protection from assault, not less. “Smacking” means to hurt a child deliberately, and this should not be an acceptable thing to do.

Some parents claim it is their right to hit their children and the state should not intervene. But children are not the property of their parents. Violence against anyone, including anyone in the family, should be illegal and the state should intervene to stop people getting hurt.

There are numerous other reasons why hitting children should be banned. Firstly, adults need to set a good example for young children to follow. The idea that if someone does something you dislike, you hit them, is surely not a message we want children to pick up. The UK is also under international pressure to give children equal protection. For instance, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the European Committtee on Social Rights have both said the UK needs to update its laws. The UK is behind several countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, which have all outlawed corporal punishment. Thirdly, the vague wording of rules over hitting children leaves children open to more serious abuse. One person’s “reasonable punishment” will seem extreme to others. Research has also shown that parents often hit their children harder than they mean to. A complete ban on violence against children removes any ambiguity.

News reports frequently feature statistics on how many parents support smacking. Children’s views are rarely mentioned. This needs to change.

The Children are Unbeatable Alliance is a campaign to make hitting children against the law. They are looking for people, especially children and young people, to get involved in their campaign. If you want to get involved you should contact Children are Unbeatable, on

Discrimination (still too long)

“If the Prime Minister lived my life for a week, he would find that he is constantly victimized just for being a young person. He would find that instead of walking into a shopping centre proud to be a world leader, he would instead be frowned upon by the world as a troublemaker and potential shoplifter. He would find that instead of being go where he wants, when he wants, that he is restricted by signs saying “no more than one child at any time”. At this point he’d think to himself, if that sign said “no more than one gay at any time”, or “no more than one old person at any time”, that it would be against the law.” (Male 17, Lincolnshire).

At a recent seminar about human rights and equality hosted by CRAE (The Children’s Rights Alliance for England), a group of children and young people gave examples of young people being treated unfairly. Age discrimination takes many forms and adults treat young people in ways that just wouldn’t be tolerated by other sectors of society, from being refused an ambulance because an adult wasn’t present when a young person was taken ill late at night, to being banned from a supermarket café if in school uniform, or in shops, simply not being served before adults.
This point was also made by the chair of the Equality and Diversity Forum, Sarah Spencer, who spoke at the same event about what the government should do about discrimination and rights for children. There are two things she felt we should be campaignng for:
Age GFS (goods facilities and services) First, that people of all ages should be protected from age discrimination when buying goods or receiving services – just as they already are protected from discrimination on grounds of their race, disability, gender, religion or belief and sexual orientation.
(the law would allow more favourable treatment, like subsidised public transport, for children and older people).
Planning for the future Secondly, Public bodies like councils should think about the potential impact on children or young person, and consult with them while they are still making plans
What this would mean is that, in planning any future services, each organisation would have to think about the potential impact on children, and to consult children in the process. Then the organisation would have to take that into account before making decisions.
If they had a duty to consider the impact on children in all those areas, and to give children a voice, some services, at least, would become more sensitive to their needs and more effective in addressing them. So that’s a goal really worth campaigning for.
But there was an even more important issue, that of adult’s attitudes to children. A change in the law may help, but this where young people can make a difference, by challenging adult’s attitudes and broadcasting what children and young people are doing every day to make their own lives and those of others better.
School Councils can take a lead on this, by making sure that what they achieve is broadcast far and wide throughout the school community, so every student can take pride in being a young person that has so much to contribute.
++++++++++++++++++ INSET
Conceptions of children
To caricature the current situation, the child moves through Whitehall growing and shrinking like Alice: in the Department of Health she is a small potential victim, at the Treasury and Department of Education a growing but silent unit of investment, but at the Home Office a huge and threatening yob. Of course these are stereotypes; but they resonate, because there is some truth in them.”
(Helen Seaford TCS)

Surely everyone should have equal protection in the law? If anything, children need extra protection from violence, not less. “Smacking” means hurting a child on purpose, and this should not be something it is OK to do.

Some parents say that they have a right to hit their children and the state should not intervene. But parents don’t own their children. Violence against anyone, including anyone in the family, should be illegal and the state should intervene to stop people getting hurt.

There are lots of other reasons why hitting children should be banned. Firstly, adults need to set a good example for young children to follow. The idea that if someone does something you don’t like, you hit them, is surely not a message we want children to pick up. Also, the UK is behind lots of other countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, which have all made hitting children illegal. Thirdly, research has shown that parents often hit their children harder than they mean to. A complete ban on violence against children would help protect children from serious abuse.

News reports often include statistics on how many parents support smacking. Children’s opinions are rarely mentioned. This needs to change.

The Children are Unbeatable Alliance is a campaign to make hitting children against the law. They are looking for people, especially children, to get involved in their campaign. If you want to get involved you should contact Children are Unbeatable, on

Overfed on Blogs

In Uncategorized on August 13, 2007 at 1:08 pm

I love… and hate… this cartoon by Dave Walker (he has so many really great ones). It represents what I have been feeling for some time now. It’s nobody’s fault… just the nature of the beast. I think the title “Overfed” is not quite accurate for me. It is more the “need” I feel to have to read so many blogs – or keep up with them. I don’t think that here is anything intrinsically harmful about reading too much. However, I find that it sometimes takes me away from

cartoon from www.weblogcartoons.com

other, more scholarly reading in journals and other places that I should be keeping up on. I think partly it is a little difficult keeping up with the conversational aspect of blogging. It is one thing to read them, but when you go in and want to maintain active discussions through commenting and then have to go back to all of your comments to see if anyone responded to them… well, it all takes time. I think I just need to pick the few that I want to participate in while having others that I just read. And, I’m not even bringing technologies like Twitter into the picture here. I don’t know…

How do you manage your time with the presence of the blogosphere in your own personal sphere?

Shared Voice with VoiceThread

In Uncategorized on August 8, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I have been trying out the collaborative storytelling service VoiceThread and I have to say, I love it! For those who don’t know what it is, in a nutshell

VoiceThread

it allows registered (free) users to upload pictures, record commentary, use a digital marker to annotate photos, and invite others to comment on the same photos. The service adds their comments to the comments that you have already made. In the end, you and whoever you have invited can collaboratively tell a story, share memories or thoughts, give presentations,… And, there are a number of excellent privacy options that allow you to really protect your content or share it freely with the world, allowing anyone to comment as well. I can think of so many applications of this in the classroom. Students could retell their experiences after a field trip or school event once you have uploaded the photos. Pen-pals could share their experiences. Students could collaborate on projects or ideas. Parents could comment on classroom activities. Students could react to questions and visual content for homework. Just a few ideas… Do you have any to offer?

Collaborative Video

In Uncategorized on August 3, 2007 at 9:41 am

Google has pitched a new form of video authoring, done collaboratively, but asynchronously. They have an ongoing challenge for individuals to video a 10 second video clip with the Google Mail icon moving from left to right across the Collaborative Gmail Video Challengeframe and they are stitching together the most creative clips to form one video short highlighting Gmail. What a cool idea. We have seen so many collaborative 2.0 learning activities that have occurred online, but collaborative video brings a whole new form of collaborative authoring. Think of the creativity that could be unleashed if a digital story, for example, was researched, written, storyboarded, filmed, and edited by groups of students who do not even live in the same country or continent. What rich perspective in the form of video could be achieved. Think of the authentic discussions that would be going on behind the scenes as the final product was negotiated. Logistically, there would be some hurdles to overcome, but the idea is fascinating! The learning potential is astounding!

How do we prepare kids for all of this?

In Uncategorized on July 31, 2007 at 10:05 pm

According to a recent report in the UK, YouTube is being accused of not enforcing its acceptable use policy with humiliating and inappropriate video content remaining accessible, including video clips that serve to bully and humiliate students and teachers. The report concludes that YouTube has joined a governmental anti-bullying task force. It is too bad that with almost every new and exciting tool that comes out, there are those who seek to use it for evil. Human nature. Even the OLPC laptops deployed in Nigeria to bring illumination and empowerment to the children there are being used by some to look at porn. Human nature. Now filters are having to be put on all of them and successive builds of the XO laptop. With all of the wonderful potential with all of these web-based tools how do we really prepare a generation of children to use them in a positive manner. How do we teach them to make right choices with so many seductive, destructive options at only a click away… and a private click at that? Internet predators aside for a moment, it is the private nature of such personal behavior that makes evil so enticing, I think, especially for those who would never engage in such types of behavior publicly. I think more discussion needs to be placed on these types of issues within the educational technology community. My fear is that a whole new generation is arising, both empowered by information and deceived by an increasing flow of destructive information. How to we tackle this?

My 8 yr. old son has his 9 yr. old cousin visiting for a few weeks. Yesterday that sat down together to play Lego StarWars on our computer. My son has enjoyed playing the game over the past year, but his interest has steadily decreased as he was not able to progress to successive levels. I think his increased frustration led to decreased motivation. Sound familiar? Does this happen in the classroom? Anyway, he and his cousin sat down to play it together – 4 hands on the keyboard, each controlling a different character. Well,… Read the rest of this entry »

Safari 3.0 Beta

In Uncategorized on July 27, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I just downloaded and installed the latest (next) version of Safari that is to be released with the next version of OS X. It is in beta right now, but is quite functional. It is also available for Windows systems for the first time now. There are few things about it that I really like. For example, if you use tabbed browsing, you can drag a tab out of the browser window and that page will open in a new window. Also, it has a great word search feature. When invoked (cmd+f), a small search window opens at the top of the page. When a word is searched for, the entire page is darkened, with only the searched term highlighted for the entire page. Then, you can look at each instance as it is highlighted in yellow. For me, this is a very useful feature that they built in. Also, a number of java features that used to send me scrambling to Firefox now are functional (like using the visual text editing tools here in WordPress). But, a few functions like inserting hyperlinks suddenly did not work. I have read that the purported speed increases are not quite as stellar as Apple is claiming, but it works just fine for me so far.

One thing to be aware of – when you download and install it, it installs over your current version of Safari. Not to worry, as all your bookmarks and other settings seem to remain intact.

Ripples

In Uncategorized on July 26, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Well, as I wrote about in my first entry, I was not sure if I would prioritize my time enough to be a faithful blogger… at least a contributor. I have been a reader/lurker for a long time now. I have learned a great deal from reading other blogs, namely Will Richardson’s Weblogg-ed, Ewen McIntosh’s edu.blogs, Tim Lauer’s Education/Technology, Scott Mcleod’s Dangerously Irrelevant, Steve Dembo’s teach42, just to name a few. There are so many more and as many folks have written, it is impossible to read and keep up with them all. And I like what Steve Dembo recently wrote about being more than a reader and even contributor to the blogosphere – rather an intellectual community whose joint contributions lead to action being taken and change taking place. I have had many impressions at times that the educational blogging community has simply digitized griping and complaining. Don’t get me wrong – this is not my overall impression at all. I just get annoyed when I read blogs that come across as digital teachers’ lounges. In the same way that these teachers’ complaints lead to nothing changed and improved, so do these types of blog entries lend themselves to the same type of discourse. However, here I am complaining :-)   On that epiphany, I close this entry, ashamed of myself.

Enough With the Silly Pencil Argument

In Uncategorized on July 25, 2007 at 8:57 pm

pencil.jpgOkay, I understand the basic premise of the pencil argument (and here). But, come on now… this is far from an equal analogy! Here is what Doug Johnson had to say about the potential risks that pencils bring into the classroom in the February 2006 issue of Learning & Leading with Technology. It was referenced in Wesley Freyer’s latest post over on his Moving at the Speed of Creativity blog.:

1. A student might use a pencil to poke out the eye of another student.
2. A student might write a dirty word or, worse yet, a threatening note to another student, with a pencil.
3. One student might have a mechanical pencil, making those with wooden ones feel bad.
4. The pencil might get stolen.
5. Pencils break and need repairing all the time.
6. Kids who have pencils might doodle instead of working on their assignments or listening to the teacher.

Now, again, I understand the rationale behind this argument, but let’s compare:

1. Only psychopathic students would gouge out another’s eye… with anything. However, teachers have been known to be violent pencil wielders. Imagine what they could be capable of with an iPod in their hands!

2. A written insult or profanity is seen only by the one who holds the written note. We all fully understand the far-reaching implications of digital bullying!

3. One simply cannot compare pencil-envy with things of high value that create classes of students and do create envy (high-fashion clothing, shoes, and yes… electronics!)

4. In fact, pencils do get stolen all the time. I have rarely seen a student fall to pieces over it. However, if it were a $250 pencil, I could see why that could happen.

5. Pencils break. So you sharpen them again. The “repair” is done in seconds. Electronics break and are repaired with greater cost, time, and learning interruption/disruption.

6. I would much rather have a student doodle with his or her pencil than be consumed with the vast array of on-line distraction. And, most other classmates don’t usually get distracted by one student’s doodling. Not so with a laptop or other electronic device.

So, if we are to present a compelling rationale for issues surrounding freedom to learn and teaching/learning innovation, we at least need to bring valid and sound arguments to the table. To do otherwise only serves to make light of real and pressing concerns of many stakeholders. If a pencil is the equivalent of any other learning device, then I say, let’s stick with the pencils. They are cheaper, easily replaceable, quite reliable, disposable, efficient, highly portable, facilitate collaboration and sharing of information, they have excellent battery life – heck, they don’t even have lead in them anymore, making them environmentally friendly to boot!

But, if there is a significant difference here (and I would agree that there is), then we had better not be making such silly comparisons. Folks might just want to settle for the pencil, then.

Note:
Freyer’s blog post is otherwise right on the mark.

Maiden Voyage!

In Uncategorized on July 22, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Welcome! I have been reading blogs and following blogging and many other web 2.0 technologies for a long time now. I have finally decided to begin blogging for myself. I have started many times with a variety of blogging services, but just did not breathe life into any of them. I have to say, I love the whole concept, but what has always kept me away was the time factor… the time to sit down and type out what has been going on in my world. I am still somewhat skeptical about being able to keep up with it, but rather than just say “it can’t be done” without first giving it a valiant effort (as happens so often), I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Stay tuned…
